- Description
- Prominence has often been given to the lives and activities of such top female leaders in Asia as Indira Gandhi and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The ability of a small elite of highly educated, upper-class Asian women to obtain the highest political positions in their country is unmatched elsewhere in the world and deserves study. This book looks at political actors in Asia and covers a wide range of Asian countries, offers original data from various perspectives and engages the latest research on women in politics in Asia.

- Description
- According to a study by the ILO (2001), women's share of the labour force is increasing worldwide. Today, women's participation rate in the labour force is over 40 per cent of the global workforce. .Higher educational levels and falling fertility rates have contributed to this increased participation. There is also some evidence that women in some Asian countries may be less marginalised in their advancement into top managerial positions than their counterparts elsewhere. .As women become more educated and qualified for managerial positions, the number of Asian women managers and executives is predicted to rise over the next decade. This book examines the opportunities and barriers for women managers in Asia and presents an update on their progress in management.

- Description
- Since Malthus, an East–West dichotomy has been used to characterize marriage behavior in Asia and Europe. This book challenges this binary taxonomy of marriage patterns and family systems. Drawing on data, the authors compare the interpretations based on aggregate demographic patterns with studies of individual actions in local populations. The book studies local populations in Sweden, Belgium, Italy, Japan, and China.

- Description
- The last half-century has witnessed dramatic declines in gender inequality, evidenced by the rise of egalitarian views on gender roles and the narrowing of long-standing gender gaps in university attendance and labor force participation. These developments, while spectacular, have been coupled with similarly impressive forms of resistance to equalization, most notably the continuing tendency for women to crowd into female 'occupational ghettos.' Why has such extreme segregation persisted even as other types of gender inequality have lessened? Why is segregation especially extreme in precisely those countries that appear most committed to egalitarian reform and family-friendly policies? .The authors address these questions by developing a new archive of cross-national data and applying new models and methods of analysis to this archive.
