- Description
- Ruth Hemus establishes the ways in which five European women - Emmy Hennings and Sophie Taeuber in Zurich, Hannah Höch in Berlin, and Suzanne Duchamp and Céline Arnauld in Paris - made important interventions across fine art, literature, and performance. The author highlights how their techniques and approaches were characteristic of Dada's rebellion against aesthetic and cultural conventions, analyses the impact of gender on each woman's work, and shows that they were innovators and not imitators.

- Description

- Diary of the German artist Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945). The thirty-five years of life that we experience at first hand in her diary include three 'deutsche Reiche' and two world wars.

- Description
- Examines the art of American German Jewish artist Eva Hesse (1936–1970). Close readings of two unnamed works from the years 1960–61 are rooted in feminist theories of art. The way in which Hesse has been constructed as a 'woman artist' is examined as well as the legacy of the Holocaust and refugee life in her art practice. The importance of the interpretation and the relationships between artworks and audiences are emphasized. The author also writes about her own encounters with Hesse’s art and its importance for her own artistic career.

- Description
- Barbara Loftus’s figurative paintings and works in other media are known for their exploration of the interface between personal memory and historical events. In her cycle of artworks, Sigismund’s Watch, which takes its subtitle from the writings of the cultural critic Siegfried Kracauer, she reflects on the convergence of public and private life in a study of trans-generational memory. By means of her paintings, bookworks, and archival material she focuses on a day long ago in the life of her mother Hildegard during the economically volatile Weimar period in Germany. The work is accompanied by three studies of Loftus's work which identify recurrent themes, imagery, and influences.
