- Description
- This report considers the social and economic costs of violence against women and girls (VAWG) in Pakistan. The results presented originate from the What Works to Prevent Violence: Economic and Social Costs project (2014-2019), funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). One of the findings is that 2.2% of employed women in Pakistan are not working as a consequence of VAWG. Besides, children of women experiencing intimate partner violence miss over two million school days annually. The results show the impact of VAWG on economic productivity and wellbeing in Pakistan and the need for more investment in prevention programmes.

- Description
- This book examines the strength of laws addressing four types of violence against women - rape, marital rape, domestic violence, and sexual harassment - in 196 countries from 2007 to 2010. It analyzes why these laws exist in some places and not others, and why they are stronger or weaker in places where they do exist. The authors have compiled original data that allow them to test various hypotheses related to whether international law drives the enactment of domestic legal protections. They also examine the ways in which these legal protections are related to economic, political, and social institutions, and how transnational society affects the presence and strength of these laws.

- Description
- 'Author examines the role that the Amsterdam Police Department plays in the context of lesbian domestic violence and the taboos surrounding lesbian domestic violence, perceptions of how the police are handling such cases, and asks who should be initiating discussions. Author look specifically at the way the Amsterdam Police Department networks Roze in Blauw and the Domestic Violence Unit address the reporting and underreporting of abusive cases amongst lesbians. She provides the opinions and insights of police officers, LGBT therapists, researchers, and LGBT community members and analyzes what the Amsterdam Police has done in the past, what they are doing now, and what can be done in the future to address the specific needs of lesbians affected by domestic violence. The police have acknowledged that this is an issue they should be working on, but have not yet found the best way to spread awareness and handle the cases that come in. If Amsterdam can figure out a way to make this subject less taboo and more talked about, perhaps the rest of the Netherlands, Europe, and the world can keep the conversation flowing and break the silence surrounding lesbian domestic violence. - Description
- Providing interdisciplinary and empirically grounded insights into the issues surrounding gender and migration into and within Europe, this work presents a comprehensive and critical overview of the historical, legal, policy and cultural framework underpinning different types of European migration. Analysing the impact of migration on women's careers, the impact of migration on family life and gender perspectives on forced migration, the authors also examine the consequences of EU enlargement for women's migration opportunities and practices, as well as the impact of new regulatory mechanisms at EU level in addressing issues of forced migration and cross-national family breakdown. The book also offers new insight into the issue of skilled migration and the gendering of previously male-dominated sectors of the labour market.
