- Description
- Current en former prisoners, activists and academics describe how race, gender, ability and sexuality are lived in captivity. They argue that trans/queer liberation and prison abolition must be grown together. This second, revised and expanded edition includes a new foreword by CeCe McDonald which explores the importance books like 'Captive Genders' played for her during her incarceration. From her prison cell, Chelsea E. Manning writes about the relationship between military and the prison system. Janetta Johnson and Toshio Meronek argue that supporting people after they are released is vital to abolition. Kalaniopua Young explores the histories of colonialism, forced gender normativity and prison. - Description
- In this publication, the author draws upon four years of on-the-ground research in a major US women's prison to uncover why tougher drug policies have so greatly affected those incarcerated there, and how the very nature of punishment in women's detention centers has been deeply altered as a result. Through interviews with prisoners and state personnel, she reveals that popular so-called ‘habilitation' drug treatment programs force women to accept a view of themselves as inherently damaged, aberrant addicts in order to secure an earlier release.

- Description
- The mainstream reproductive rights movement, largely dominated by white women and consumed with protecting the right to abortion, has failed to respond adequately to the policing, criminalization, and incarceration of large numbers of poor people and people of color. This book places issues of race, class, and gender at the center of its reproductive rights and social justice agenda by focusing on a key concern among women of color and poor communities today: the difficulty of maintaining families and sustaining community in the face of increasing criminalization. .Women of color have articulated a broad reproductive rights agenda embedded in issues of equality and social justice. They have challenged coercive population policies, demanded access to safe and accessible birth control and asserted their right to economic and political resources to maintain healthy children. .This book discusses the policing of bodies by examining the experiences of women prisoners, women with AIDS in correctional facilities, women in systems of prostitution, immigrant women and women of color.

- Description
- This collection brings together eleven essays--eight previously published and three new--that document the evolving relationship between academic feminism and political feminism as Freedman has studied and lived it. .Following an introduction that presents a map of the personal and intellectual trajectory of Freedman's work, the first section of essays, on the origins and strategies of women's activism in U.S. history, reiterates the importance of valuing women in a society that has long devalued their contributions. The second section, on the maintenance of sexual boundaries, explores the malleability of both sexual identities and sexual politics. Underlying the collection is an inquiry into the changing meanings of gender, sexuality, and politics during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries along with a concern for applying the insights of women's history broadly, from the classroom to the courthouse

- Description
- In the United States female crime has grown at a faster rate than male crime over the past couple of decades. Despite this, only limited research has been done by criminologists, psychologists and sociologists on this growing problem. This study examines female criminals: who they are, where they come from, what crimes they commit, why they commit criminal and delinquent acts, and how they are incarcerated. Part One discusses the extent and nature of female crime in the United States, and compares it to male crime. Part Two looks at early theories on the topic. Part Three explores the criminality and deviance of women offenders, while Part Four concentrates on the crimes and delinquency of juveniles. The work concludes with a discussion of female offenders in the custody of correctional authorities.

- Description
- Description of the different ways in which lives of LGBT individuals in the US are criminalized, policed, and punished. The authors describe queer criminal archetypes, such as 'gleeful gay killers', 'lethal lesbians', 'disease spreaders', and 'deceptive gender benders'. They explore the punishment of queer expression, regardless of whether a crime was ever committed. The authors argue that the policing of sex and gender both bolsters and reinforces racial and gender inequalities.

- Description
- The articles in this collection provide insight into the effects of structural arrangements on behavior and highlight the intersection of race, class, and gender. The editors chose articles illuminating the gender and environmental factors that precede criminal behavior and the effects of gender on how the criminal justice system perceives and treats adult women offenders. Section I is an overview of feminist theory in criminology, from its early influence to its recent contributions. Section II addresses gender issues important to understanding women and the crimes they commit and emphasizes the need to study how gender organizes criminal activity. The articles in section III discuss the laws and policies affecting women offenders, including the effects of stereotypes on sentencing and the rising rates of incarceration due to drug laws. The final section analyzes the treatment of women in prison and programs for female offenders from a feminist perspective.

- Description
- In BookMarks Holloway explores the public side of reading and specifically how books and booklists form a public image of African Americans. Holloway reflects on the ways that her parents guided her reading when she was young and her memories of reading to her children. She takes us on a personal journey that considers the histories of reading in children's rooms, prison libraries, and 'Negro' libraries of the early twentieth century, and that finally reveals how her identity as a scholar, a parent, and an African American woman has been subject to judgments that public cultures make about race and our habits of reading. .Holloway calls our attention to a remarkable trend of many prominent African American writers--including Maya Angelou, W.E.B. Du Bois, Audre Lorde, Nikki Giovanni, Malcolm X, and Zora Neale Hurston. Their autobiographies and memoirs are consistently marked with booklists--records of their own habits of reading. She examines these lists, along with the trends of selection in Oprah Winfrey's popular book club, raising the questions: What does it mean for prominent African Americans to associate themselves with European learning and culture? How do books by black authors fare in the inevitable hierarchy of a booklist?

Ze onderzocht ook de geschiedenis van moeders achter tralies, hun situatie in andere landen, hun rechten en plichten.

- The author describes the contemporary experiences of women in prison within the context of the increase in incarceration of specific U.S. populations in the last three decades of the 20th century. She argues that the socially structured conditions of class, race, and gender in the context of globalization, unemployment, and the prison industrial complex help to explain the findings.
