- Description
- This anthology brings together a broad selection of British women's writings from the Early Modern period, most of which are unavailable elsewhere. Unlike many anthologies in the field, this one is multigenre, including poetry, literary prose, polemical prose, and drama. Full texts and substantial extracts are included. Spelling and punctuation have been modernized. Augmenting the texts are brief biographies, bibliographies, an index oa themes, and a general introduction covering the wider social and religious context in which women wrote and elucidating issues of feminism and feminine authorship, and of early New England colonialism..

- Description
- The contributors to this book examine women and the construction of gender thematically, dealing with the areas of politics, law, religion, sexuality, literature and economics, and in a variety of social categories, from Christians and Moriscas, queens and merchants, peasants and visionaries, heretics and madwomen. The essays cover different regions in the Spanish monarchy, including Andalusia, Aragon, Castile, Catalonia, Valencia and Spanish America, from the fifteenth century through to the eighteenth century. The book focuses on two central themes: gender relations in the shaping of family and community life, and women's authority in spheres of power. The representation of women in a variety of texts such as poetry, court cases, or even account books illustrate the multifaceted world in which women lived, constantly choosing and negotiating their identities.

- Description
- Women enslaved in the Americas came to bear highly gendered reputations among whites—as “scheming Jezebels,” ample and devoted “mammies,” or suffering victims of white male brutality and sexual abuse—that revealed more about the psychology of enslaving than about the courage and creativity of the women enslaved. These images of modern New World slavery contrast with the equally expressive virtual invisibility of the women enslaved in the Old—concealed in harems, represented to meddling colonial rulers as “wives” and “nieces,” taken into African families and kin-groups in subtlely nuanced fashion.
