- Description
- Studies focusing exclusively on the connection between Arab Muslim women's educational pursuits and their gender perceptions, and how their gender perceptions may have changed as a result of living in two different cultures, are rarely conducted. Additionally, the factors that may influence an Arab Muslim woman's educational pursuits seem seldom investigated. This article is highlighting some factors that may influence Arab Muslim women's gender perceptions. In researching Arab Muslim women's experiences, I considered the diversity and multiplicity of their race, ethnicity, class, and experience. How Arab Muslim women construct the gender aspect of their identities and how these identities may have changed or shifted as a result of living in Canada and attending Canadian educational institutions is explored. The cultural and religious reproduction of gender socialization is a major part of the analysis in this article.

- Description
- The book is an ethnographic study based on in-depth interviews with Swedish and American women who have converted to Islam. Proceeding from the women's life-stories, the author explores the appeal of Islam to some Western women and the personal meaning assigned to the religion. She notes that while conversion is often perceived as a dramatic change in worldview, the women's experiences point to an equally important continuity. Themes explored are identity formation, personal models of gender, spirituality, social conscience and femininity, the veil, identity formation and social relations and prejudices.

- Description
- Participating in the world of popular mainstream fashion—often thought to be the domain of the West young Muslim women are part of an emergent cross-faith transnational youth subculture of modest fashion. In treating hijab and other forms of modest clothing as fashion, Lewis counters the overuse of images of veiled women as 'evidence' in the prevalent suggestion that Muslims and Islam are incompatible with Western modernity. This book contextualizes modest wardrobe styling within Islamic and global consumer cultures, interviewing key players including designers, bloggers, shoppers, store clerks, and shop owners.

- Description
- The objective of this book is developing a theory and a practice of educating Muslim woman outside the patriarchal discourse that views woman as the passive depositor of culture. It emphasizes the core issues in educating the Muslim woman (and man), and their relevance to contemporary discussions of Islam, Muslim women, and Islamic education beyond the familiair geographical and cultural boundaries of the 'Muslim world' and beyond the geopolitical boundaries of 'global democracy'. The majority of examples presented are taken from among North American Muslim women, the early Muslim community in Arabia (c. 632) and the contemporary Muslim community in Syria.
