- Description
- This report considers the social and economic costs of violence against women and girls (VAWG) in Pakistan. The results presented originate from the What Works to Prevent Violence: Economic and Social Costs project (2014-2019), funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). One of the findings is that 2.2% of employed women in Pakistan are not working as a consequence of VAWG. Besides, children of women experiencing intimate partner violence miss over two million school days annually. The results show the impact of VAWG on economic productivity and wellbeing in Pakistan and the need for more investment in prevention programmes.

- Description
- This ethnography examines the impact of welfare reform on women seeking to escape domestic violence. Dana-Ain Davis profiles twenty-two women, thirteen of whom are Black, living in a battered women’s shelter in a small city in upstate New York. She explores the contradictions between welfare reform’s supposed success in moving women off of public assistance and toward economic self-sufficiency and the consequences welfare reform policy has presented for Black women fleeing domestic violence. Focusing on the intersection of poverty, violence, and race, she demonstrates the differential treatment that Black and White women face in their entanglements with the welfare bureaucracy by linking those entanglements to the larger political economy of a small city.

- Description
- Hammer analyses the popularization of a certain conservative feminism, or pseudofeminism, that creates intellectual celebrities, like Paglia, Hoff Sommers, Roiphe en Naomi Wolf, bus does not address the real problems that women continue to face. She discusses the role of the media in the creation of feminist celebrities that appeal to young women. By shedding light on the links between local and global violence against women and children as part of a colonizing system of family terrorism, Hammer prepares the ground for a transformative feminism in an era of globalization.

- Description
- The first section of this book examines definitions of violence against women. It discusses responses to violence that are based on human rights approaches, and asks why - until recently - development organisations have failed to use strategies to counter violence against women and to support the victims. The second section focuses on possible strategies for governments and NGO's. Case studies drawn from over 30 countries worldwide, from times of peace and armed conflict, illustrate the possibilities and pitfalls of different strategies and interventions.

- Description
- Despite global undertakings to safeguard the full enjoyment of human rights, culture, traditional practices and religion are widely used to discriminate against women. In this volume 17 scholars approach women's human rights globally, regionally and nationally, combining the perspectives of public and private international law. Comprehensive legal, culture-based and theoretical overviews are combined with analyses of topical issues, such as unbalanced sex-ratios, intercountry adoption, women as refugees or as 'surrogate mothers,' violence against women and cross-border enforcement of protection orders.

- Description
- This book develops a feminist political economy approach to identify the linkages between different forms of violence against women and macro structural processes in strategic local and global sites - from the household to the transnational level. It seeks to account for the globally increasing scale and brutality of violence against women. These sites include economic restructuring and men's reaction to the loss of secure employment, the abusive exploitation associated with the transnational migration of women workers, the growth of a sex trade around the creation of free trade zones, the spike in violence against women in financial liberalization and crises, the scourge of sexual violence in armed conflict and post-crisis peacebuilding or reconstruction efforts and the deleterious gendered impacts of natural disasters. Examples are drawn from South Africa, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, China, Ciudad Juarez in Mexico, the Pacific Islands, Argentina, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Haiti, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States and Iceland.
