- Description
- Ahmed shows how feminist theory is generated from everyday life and the ordinary experiences of being a feminist at home and at work. Building on legacies of feminist of color scholarship in particular, Ahmed offers a personal meditation on how feminists become estranged from worlds they critique, often by naming and calling attention to problems and how feminists learn about worlds from their efforts to transform them.

- Description
- Looking forward to the 100-year anniversary of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, this collection of essays looks back at the decades since women won the right to vote to analyze the changes, developments, and even continuities in women's roles in the broad political sphere. Ultimately, the book asks two questions about the last 100 years of women's suffrage: How did the Nineteenth Amendment alter the American political system? and How has women's engagement in politics changed over the last 100 years?

- Description
- This book moves beyond the traditional understanding of the four elements of hip-hop culture—rapping, breakdancing, graffiti art, and deejaying—to articulate how hip-hop feminist scholarship can inform educational practices and spark, transform, encourage, and sustain local and global youth community activism efforts. This multi-genre and interdisciplinary reader engages performance, poetry, document analysis, playwriting, polemics, cultural critique, and autobiography to radically reimagine the political utility of hip-hop-informed social justice efforts that insist on an accountable analysis of identity and culture. Featuring scholarship from professors and graduate and undergraduate students actively involved in the work they profess, this book's commitment to making the practice of hip-hop feminist activism practical in our everyday

- Description
- To mark Virago's 40th birthday, the publisher has produced this collection of personal responses to the question, 'What is feminism and what does it mean to you?' The 50-plus brief accounts, from successful and often celebrated women – selected to be multi-cultural, varied in class, age and sexual orientation (albeit mainly London-based) – all address the question with that familiar feminist mantra, 'The personal is the political'. They draw powerful lessons from exploitation and marginalisation, as well as violence towards women in families, workplaces and the public realms of law and politics, not to mention the spheres of theatre, fiction and pornography.

- Feminisme.

- Description
- Phyllis Chesler was a pioneer of Second Wave Feminism. Chesler and the women who came out between 1972-1975 brought class action lawsuits on behalf of economic discrimination, opened rape crisis lines and shelters for battered women, held marches and sit-ins for abortion and equal rights. They began the first-ever national and international public conversations about birth control and abortion, sexual harassment, violence against women, female orgasm, and a woman’s right to kill in self-defense. The feminist movement has changed over the years, but Chesler knew some of its first pioneers, including Gloria Steinem, Kate Millett and Andrea Dworkin. Some had been viewed as whores, witches, and madwomen, but were changing the world and becoming major players in history.

- Description
- Kristan Poirot demonstrates that contemporary theories about sex, gender, identity, and difference compel a rethinking of the history of feminist movements and their rhetorical practices. .Poirot focuses on five case studies : the circulation of Sojourner Truth's 'Ain't I a Woman?' in early and contemporary feminist contexts: the visual rhetorics of the feminist self-help health movement: the public discourse of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and early nineteenth-century ideas about suffrage, sex, and race: the conflicts over lesbian sexuality in the 1960s and 1970s: and the discourse that surrounds twenty-first-century SlutWalks. In the process, Poirot rethinks the terms through which we understand U.S. feminist movements to explore the ways feminism has questioned sexed distinctions and practices over time.

- Description
- This book describes what hip hop culture has 'inherited' from the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts movement, the Feminist Art movement, and 1980s and 1990s postmodern aesthetics. By comparing and contrasting the major motifs of the cultural aesthetic traditions with those of hip hop culture, all the while critically exploring the origins and evolution of black popular culture from antebellum America through to 'Obama's America', the book demonstrates that the Hip Hop generation is not the first generation of young black folk preoccupied with spirituality and sexuality, race and religion, entertainment and athletics, or ghetto culture and bourgeois culture.
