- Description
- This book examines the artistic partnership of Ben Nicholson and Winifred Nicholson in the 1920s and their friendship and collaboration with Christopher Wood, Alfred Wallis, and the potter William Staite Murray. Inspired by each other, the Nicholsons experimented furiously and often painted the same subject, one as a colorist the other more interested in form. Winifred wrote of her time with Ben, 'All artists are unique and can only unite as complementaries not as similarities'. New research based on previously unpublished letters, photographs and other material draws out their fascinating connections

- Description
- Through the work of over eighty international artists this book aims to analyze the iconography of motherhood in art and visual culture during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, from early avant-garde movements to the present. Whether as a symbol of creativity or as a metaphor for art itself, the archetype of the mother has been a central figure in the history of art, from the Venuses of the stone age to the 'bad girls' of the postfeminist era and across centuries of religious works depicting countless maternity scenes. Artists include Rineke Dijkstra, Ida Applebroog, Thomas Bayrle, Umberto Boccioni, Louise Bourgeois, Constantin Brancusi, Leonora Carrington, Salvador Dalí, and many more.

- Description
- First published in 2018. This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition on the Swedish painter Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) titled 'Hilma af Klint: paintings for the future' in Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, United States, from October 12, 2018 to April, 23, 2019. Within the arc of her production from naturalistic work in the 1890s to watercolours in the 1940s, the book and exhibition focuses on the period 1906-1920. Hilma af Klint created a body of work known as 'The paintings for the temple' that broke from the dominant painting style and are primarily abstract. Her early arrival at abstraction - before modernists as Vasily Kandinsky and Piet Mondriaan - is a radical effort to find visual expression for a transcendent, spiritual reality beyond the observable world. Contains:
Temples for painting / Tracey Bashkoff :

- Description
- Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–1654 or later) is the most celebrated woman artist of the baroque period in Italy. Her career spanned more than 40 years, as she moved between Rome, where she was raised and trained by her father, Orazio Gentileschi, to Florence, where she gained artistic independence and became the first female member of the city’s academy of artists, and to Venice, London, and Naples. Often featuring heroic female subjects, her paintings were predominantly intended for private clients. This book includes essays on her life and career: a discussion of her personal and artistic relationship with her father: a summary of critical writings and an overview of the wide range of approaches to Artemisia’s work since her rediscovery by feminist art historians more than 50 years ago: a more personal insight into Artemisia through her letters: a discussion of the artist’s self-representation in her work: and an essay dedicated to her painting technique.
