- Description
- History of the UK Women's Liberation Movement. Oral history testimonies power the work, tracing the arc of a feminist life from 1950s girlhoods to late life activism today. The author uses oral history as creative method, making significant use of ‘Sisterhood and After: The Women's Liberation Oral History Project’ to animate still-unresolved controversies of race, class, sexuality, disability, and feminist identity. She provides insight into iconic actions including the Miss World Protest, the fight to protect abortion rights, and the peace protest at Greenham Common. She also explores men's violence and today's demands for trans-liberation as areas of continuing feminist concern.

- Description
- Since the 1980s Chicana writers including Gloria Anzaldúa, Cherríe Moraga, Sandra Cisneros, Ana Castillo, and Alma Luz Villanueva have reworked iconic Mexican cultural symbols such as mother earth goddesses and La Llorona (the Wailing Woman of Mexican folklore), re-imagining them as powerful female figures. After reading the works of Chicana writers who created bold, powerful, and openly sexual female characters, Blake wondered how everyday Mexican American women would characterize their own lives in relation to the writers' radical reconfigurations of female sexuality and gender roles. Blake gathered oral histories from working-class and semiprofessional U.S. Mexicana women. Blake looks at how the Chicana professional intellectuals and the U.S. Mexicana women refigure confining and demeaning constructions of female gender roles and racial, ethnic, and sexual identities.

- Description
- This book provides a survey of new work by scholars wholook at the ways gender and sexuality constellate with race. Cutting across the humanities and social sciences, and situated in sites across the black diaspora, the articles challenge notions that we are living in a post-racial age and instead argue for the specificity of black cultural experiences as shaped by gender and sex. The volume underscores the ways an array of violence impacts and shapes black life, while also testifying to the resiliency, creativity, and vitality of black people.

- Description
- In this book, the authors tell the life stories of 108 brown, white, and black teen mothers, exposing the problems in their lives often overlooked in pregnancy prevention campaigns. Some stories are tragic and painful, marked by sexual abuse, partner violence, and school failure. Others depict 'girl next door' characters whose unintended pregnancies lay bare insidious gender disparities. Offering a perspective on the links between teen births and social inequalities, this book demonstrates how the intersecting hierarchies of gender, race, and class shape the biographies of young mothers.

- Description
- Men have been the dominant sex since the dawn of mankind. Hanna Rosin notices that this truth is no longer true. At this moment women are no longer gaining on men: they have pulled decisively ahead. In this book Rosin reveals how this new state of affairs is radically shifting the power dynamics between men and women at every level of society, with profound implications for marriage, sex, children, work, and more. Rosin shows how the radically different ways men and women today earn, learn, spend, couple up—even kill—has turned the big picture upside down.

- Description
- This book analyzes how reformers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries perceived delinquent girls and their often troubled lives. The author examines the cases of vulnerable young women to reveal the centrality of sex, class, gender, and disability in the formation of scientific and social reform. Rembis recounts the contestations between largely working-class teenage girls and the mostly female reformers and professionals who attempted to diagnose and treat them based on changing ideas of eugenics, gender, and impairment. He shows how generational roles and prevailing notions of gender and sexuality influenced reformers to restrict, control, and institutionalize undesirable 'defectives' within society, and he details the girls' attempts to influence methods of diagnosis, discipline, and reform.

- Description
- The author researched domestic violence among the working class in France and uncoverd intimate details of daily life and the complex workings of court proceedings in fin-de-siècle Paris. She looked at hundreds of court records to understand why so many perpetrators of violent crime were acquitted. She finds that court verdicts depended on community standards for violence between couples. Her search uncovers testimony from witnesses, defendants, and victims documenting the conflicts and connections among men and women who struggled to balance love, desire, and economic need in their relationships. The analysis of these cases also reconstructs the social, cultural, and legal conditions in which they took place. The ethnographic approach offers insight into the daily lives of nineteenth-century Parisians, revealing how they chose their partners, what they fought about, and what drove them to violence. In their battles over money and sex, couples were in effect testing and enforcing gender roles.

- Description
- Through the stories of Black women who have been most affected by racism, poverty, class inequality, Richie shows that the threat of violence to Black women has never been more serious. She demonstrates how conservative legal, social, political and economic policies have impacted activism in the U.S.-based movement to end violence against women. Richie argues that Black women face particular peril because of the ways that race and culture have not figured centrally enough in the analysis of the causes of gender violence. This book brings issues of sexuality, class, age, and criminalization into focus right alongside of questions of public policy and gender violence, resulting in a critique, a re-framing of stories, and a call to action for change.

- Tthis study provides an account of the multiple struggles of the Malaysian women’s movement, from securing gender equality in a patriarchal society to achieving unity among members of a multi-ethnic society that are further divided along class and religious lines. The author of this book detail the importance of the role of the women’s movement, led by numerous unsung personalities in promoting social change in Malaysia. The book centres on a crucial argument: that in the context of an ethnically fragmented post-colonial, authoritarian society, an autonomous woman movement, which began in the early eighties had actually achieved significant political success. However the study observes that by the late 1990s, feminist issues were also readily appropriated by the state and the market, and also suggests that the emergence of ‘market feminism’ poses specific challenges for the future of the Malaysian women’s movement.
