- Description
- This exploratory study examined dimensions of staff-inmate sexual contact in a correctional facility in Hawaii through two focus group interviews with imprisoned women. The women described three types of sexual abuse in prison: 'trading,' 'love,' and 'in the line of duty.' Findings include the women's account of these forms of abuse and their perceptions of responsibility for staff-inmate sexual contact in correctional institutions. The women's beliefs about factors contributing to sexual abuse of female inmates, including job expectations of and power issues among adult correctional officers (ACO's), and the consequences of reporting abuse are also discussed. Given the vulnerability of female inmates and the power dynamics that typify the prison context, further research on this problem is warranted.

- Description
- Description of the role gender plays in prison health care delivery, based on face-to-face interviews of fifty-six women inmates. The results show that women are willing to discuss only physical ailments and are reluctant to speak about mental health care or HIV. While women benefit from health care services in prison, they still feel that a female-oriented approach to health care in general will improve the services.

- Description
- The author describes the contemporary experiences of women in prison within the context of the increase in incarceration of specific U.S. populations in the last three decades of the 20th century. She argues that the socially structured conditions of class, race, and gender in the context of globalization, unemployment, and the prison industrial complex help to explain the findings.

- Description
- Making use of the concept of side-bets this study examines the gendered nature of outside influences on correctional officers' commitment to remain with the prison organization until retirement. The findings suggest that some measures of side-bets function differently for male and female officers, with those side-bets representing family affiliation and financial responsibility significantly influencing female, but not male officers' level of continuance commitment.

- Description
- Using a sample of 29 female inmates over age 50 housed in a prison, this qualitative research identified how older female offenders adapt to prison life. Based on inmate narratives, the study focuses on how prison acquaintances are selected, the evolvement of a social support network characterized by perceived support, shared activities, shared conversations, and work and recreational interactions. Barriers that prevent inmates from providing mutual support and policy issues for responding to the social needs of women aging in prison are discussed.
