Using a sample of 29 female inmates over age 50 housed in a prison, this qualitative research identified how older female offenders adapt to prison life. Based on inmate narratives, the study focuses on how prison acquaintances are selected, the evolvement of a social support network characterized by perceived support, shared activities, shared conversations, and work and recreational interactions. Barriers that prevent inmates from providing mutual support and policy issues for responding to the social needs of women aging in prison are discussed.
