- Description
- In this No-Nonsense Guide, van der Gaag offers a status report on the women of the world by examining issues like health, poverty, politics, law, education, the environment, violence, and sexuality. And although we are not yet living in a 'post-feminist' world and change is slow in coming, it is coming. But it is easy to forget just how recently so many women's rights have been won: and how many women still face violations of their rights on a daily basis.

- Comparative study of the novels written by five German-speaking women - Anna Gmeyner, Selma Kahn, Hilde Spiel, Martina Wied and Hermynia Zur Mühlen - who had to flee National Socialist Central Europe. The aim of this study is to reassess the women refugee writers' narrative strategies and integrate their work within feminist literary studies. The author investigates the five writers' narrativisation of everyday life, used to subvert the dominant discourse, and their portrayal of the intersection between class, racial and gender oppression. The book situates the novels within the theoretical discussions surrounding exile studies, social history and women's writing. . .Contents: Exile Studies in Germany, Austria and Britain - Feminist readings of women refugee novels - Portrayal of Jewish characters - Representations of women - The possibilities of everyday life - Family sagas as multicultural utopias - Respacialisation of politics - Alternative narrative space.

'Na' brothers and sisters live together their entire lives, sharing household responsibilities and raising the women's children. Originally published in France as 'Une Société sans père ni mari: les Na de Chine' (1997).

- Description
- During the years between 1980 and 1999, in the midst of war and economic crisis, a record number of women were elected to national legislatures in Central American republics. In this study the authors explore the reasons for this unprecedented political rise of women, and what effect it has had on the region. Focusing on Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, the authors analyze national and regional indicators to evaluate various hypotheses concerning the reasons for women's electoral success in the region, as well as to make comparisons with findings from other world regions.

- Description
- This study of women's violence in global politics looks at military women who engage in torture: at suicide bombers in Chechnia and the Middle East: and at the women who participated in genocides in Bosnia and Rwanda. The authors discuss the biological, psychological and sexualized stereotypes through which these women are conventionally depicted. These stereotypes keep up an idealized notion of femininity, and prevent the perception of women as independent, interdependent, and rational actors in any sphere of life. The book argues that a feminist approach to women's participation, agency and emancipation is the only tool to combat the mother, monster, and whore narratives
