- Description
- This article examines how economic, emotional and social-power related factors affect victims' behaviour in favor of prosecution during police investigations. Data drawn from police records and police narrative reports indicated that mutual charge, dual arrest, the severity of assaults and the severity of injuries suffered by victims negatively affected the victims' behavior in favor of prosecution. These findings suggest that the norm of unequal relationships between men and women combined with an indiscriminate use of mutual charge and dual arrest without considering the defensive or offensive nature of violent acts can reduce trust in the criminal justice system among women victims of domestic violence and decrease the victims' interest in pursuing prosecution.

- Case studies of the 35 women on death row in 1993 suggest that hetero-feminine image is important in engendering chivalry and thus leniency toward female offenders. Lesbians in particular were over-represented in atypical death sentence cases. Featured are media and prosecutorial representations of the cases of five lesbians on death row. These offenders were depicted as manly and man-hating women who occupy additional marginalized statuses, and who vent their rage and irrational desire for revenge through killing. Argued is that this homosexualized portrayal of female evil may affect sentencing decisions as an additional 'aggravating circumstance' in an already heinous crime.

- Description
- The research on female parolees has heen rather scant compared to the voluminous research en males. Among other reasons, a primary problem has been the difficulty of drawing a sufficient number of female cases for multivariate analysis. This manuscript reports on an analysis of 546 females in a randomly-selected sample of 4,047 parolees. The primary question is whether a classification system created on the dominantly male population will work equally well for females. Logistic regression analyses indicate that the classification variables and the subsequently-developed classification system are suitable for use with females. Alternative variables, likely to affect female parolees, were tested with the classification model and failed to offer better predictive results for females. While jurisdictions using other classification models may want to be cautious, the commonality of prediction variables among various standard instruments suggests that these findings may be generally applicable.

- This study is a theoretical application and empirical test of difference theory in the context of private criminal law practice. Difference theory posits that gender is associated with varation in perspective on justice and morality, and examination of mainstream professional values in the legal system reveals those values to emphasize what are thought to be masculinist values. Hence it is hypothesized that female lawyers will depart from male norms in their expressions of professional values. Result of a survey reveals limited support for these theoretical predictions.

- Descriptive history of the first black woman executed in North Carolina in the twentieth century. Anthropological and criminological discussions of Negro primitivism and gender parity are offered as viable explanations for the paucity of literature that specifically focuses on the manner in which violent black females have been socially constructed as to legitimize their oftentimes harsh punishments in the historic southern justice system.
