- Description
- This book explores how a small network of international development actors brings population control back to the center of public environment debate. Narratives about human rights abuses, racism and anti abortion were driven underground until now. The author shows how the population growth has been reframed as an urgent source of climate crisis and an opportunity to support women's sexual and reproductive health rights.

- Description
- This volume explores the concept of Japanese reproductive rights and liberties in light of recent developments in disability studies. The author asks questions about what constitutes personhood and how, in the twenty-first century, we come to understand eugenic abortion and other bioethical arguments. Tracing the origin and influence of the concept of a 'right', the author places the term in local social and historical contexts in order to determine that it still carries overtones of Anglo-American philosophy, rather than universal truth De auteur verkent het concept 'recht', en hoe dit concept een rol heeft gespeeld in het veroorzaken van onenigheid en misvatting tussen bewegingen van gehandicapte mensen en vrouwen met betrekking tot de kwestie van selectieve abortus in Japan.

- Description
- This book looks at why do governments promote women's rights. Through analysis of state action in seventy countries from 1975 to 2005, the book shows how different women's rights issues involve different histories and trigger different conflicts. Change on violence against women and workplace equality involves a logic of status politics: feminist movements leverage international norms to contest women's subordination. Family law, abortion and contraception, conform to a logic of doctrinal politics, which turns on relations between religious groups and the state. Publicly-paid parental leave and child care follow a logic of class politics, in which the strength of Left parties and overall economic conditions are more salient.
