- Description
- This book examines the relationship between words and images in various life-writing works produced by nineteenth to twenty-first century American and British women. It addresses the politics of images in women’s life writing, contending that the presence or absence of images is often strategic. Including a range of different forms of life writing, chapters draw on traditional (auto)biographies, travel narratives, memoirs, diaries, autofiction, cancer narratives, graphic memoirs, artistic installations, quilts and online performances, as life writing moves from page to screen and other media. The book explores a wide range of women who have crossed the boundary between text and image: painters who have become writers, novelists who have become painters, writers who hesitate between images and words, models who seize the camera, and artists who use the frame as a page.

- Description
- History of the UK Women's Liberation Movement. Oral history testimonies power the work, tracing the arc of a feminist life from 1950s girlhoods to late life activism today. The author uses oral history as creative method, making significant use of ‘Sisterhood and After: The Women's Liberation Oral History Project’ to animate still-unresolved controversies of race, class, sexuality, disability, and feminist identity. She provides insight into iconic actions including the Miss World Protest, the fight to protect abortion rights, and the peace protest at Greenham Common. She also explores men's violence and today's demands for trans-liberation as areas of continuing feminist concern.

- Description
- In Britain today, three-quarters of mothers are in employment and paid work is an unremarkable feature of women's lives after childbirth. À century ago, working mothers were in the minority, excluded from many occupations, whilst their wage-earning was widely perceived as a social ill. McCarthy accounts for this transformation, whose consequences have been momentous for Britain's society and economy.

- Description
- Will gender balance in elected assemblies soon be reached? Around 100 years after women's suffrage was gained most countries are still at some distance from this goal. In 2013, the average representation of women in the world's parliaments was around 20 per cent. This book analyses the longitudinal development of women's political representation in eight old democracies, where women were enfranchised before and around World War I: Denmark, Iceland, Germany, The Netherlands, New Jersey (USA), New South Wales (Australia), Sweden, and the United Kingdom. These countries/states have all followed an incremental track model of change in women's position in political life, but have followed different trajectories. This slow development stands in contrast to recent examples of fast track development in many countries from the Global South, not least as a result of the adoption of gender quotas. Furthermore, the book discusses in four separate chapters the common historical development in old democracies, the different trajectories and sequences, the framing of women politicians, and the impact of party and party system change. In this book a new model of male dominance is developed and defined in terms of both degree and scope. Four stages are identified: male monopoly, small minority, large minority, and gender balance.

- Description
- Political parties can make or break women's attempts to stand for political office. This book nvestigates this problem, bringing together insights from feminist and new institutional theory to explore and understand the gendered dynamics of institutional innovation and change in candidate selection and recruitment. Drawing on an original empirical case study of candidate selection in post-devolution Scotland, the book looks at the gendered dynamics of institutional design, continuity and change in the political recruitment process and illustrates the difficulties of reforming recruitment in the face of powerful institutional and gendered legacies.
