SamenvattingThis study looks at the life and work of early modern women who advocated by word or example for the education of women. They did so in convents, schools, court, theatres, and homes. Isabel la Católica, Santa Teresa de Jesus , and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz are well known examples of educated women of letters, but the author shows that they were not exceptional. The author uses primary documents, published works, artwork, and critical sources drawn from history, literature, theatre, philosophy, women's studies, education, and science to compare ideas on education of women with the actual practices.
