SamenvattingDiscusses the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals, which aim to achieve basic education for all by 2015. The authors ask whether such global agendas can address national and local gender inequalities and empower women through education. The definitions of gender equality are reconceptualised drawing on social sciences, international organisations and policy makers. Experiences of students and teachers are examined as well as the impact of global gender agendas on national education policies.
