The author describes how poor women in Malawi try to make a living by agreeing to have sex with men in bars, resthouses, workplaces and communities and how this fight for survival exposes them to the risk of contracting AIDS. She explains why peer education interventions directed at prostitutes and assuming mutual soliditary do not work.

Author would like to stimulate discussion on the ethics of unconsented crosscultural anthropological research by reporting on the mystery client method used in Malawi to assess condom negotiation skills among 'bar girls' and 'freelancers'with clients. This method was part of reseach methods in a study on the changing dynamics and complexities of bartering sex among women in three districts.
