Through the examination of more than 500 pieces of British erotica, this book looks at sex as seen in culture, religion and medicine throughout the leighteenth-century. A new form of flagellation pornography burst to the fore in the 1770s when erotic fiction became littered with whipping scenarios. Erotic poems, salacious prints and obscene satires were sold in London coffee-shops, in taverns, on street corners and in various book shops along the Strand and in Covent Garden. The underworld of booksellers and distributors are explored through trial records and witness depositions. This book also explores popular images in erotica: femal flagellants whipping their submissive charges: depraved monks corrupting innocent nuns: libertine rascals seducing young virgins: and rakes carousing with their whores.

This study examines how cross-dressers and transsexuals are represented in three different film genres - comedies, thrillers and mixed genre productions - focussing on examples such as Some Like It Hot, Tootsie, Mrs Doubtfire, Victor/Victoria, Psycho, Dressed to Kill, Silence of the Lambs,The Crying Game and Boys Don't Cry. It also includes a chapter on 'shemale' Internet pornography. Relying on psychoanalytic, queer and other post-modern theories, the author describes the influence of these cultural representations in the context of an increasingly, problematic distinction between the worlds of the imagination and reality, demonstrating the interdependency of our perceptions of transgender and its culturally constructed images.

In Publishing Women, Diana Robin describes the story of women’s cultural and intellectual leadership in early modern Italy, illuminating the factors behind—and the significance of—their sudden dominance. Focusing on the collective publication process, Robin portrays communities in Naples, Venice, Rome, Siena, and Florence, where women engaged in activities that ranged from establishing literary salons to promoting religious reform. Her cultural history considers the significant roles these women played in tandem with men, rather than separated from them. In doing so, it collapses the borders between women’s history, Renaissance and Reformation studies, and book history to evoke a historical moment that catapulted women’s writings and women-sponsored books into the public sphere for the first time anywhere in Europe.
