Collection summary

Ordening

The WfWP archive is composed of administrative material provided by the Steering Committee (SC) and Secretariat in the Netherlands. Besides boxes of miscellaneous audio-visual material, all material was presented in folders with a clear and uniform layout: administration, i.e. financial and legal documents, and correspondence between SC and/or Secretariat and a member organization/strategic partner/candidates for membership. This inventory has been arranged according to the same layout it was presented in. Any exceptions in the layout are mentioned explicitly.

Historical Note

Women for Water Partnership (WfWP) is a partnership of women’s organizations and networks, uniting women leadership in around 100 predominantly low and middle-income countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA region) and Western Europe, reaching over one million women; since its establishment in 2004, Women for Water Partnership (WfWP) has consistently raised the profile of women in the water and development sector, both in their professional capacity and as major group in society; WfWP headquarter is based in the Netherlands; as of 2018, the partnership includes 27 member organizations that are all rooted in society and are active in the areas of water and sanitation, sustainable development, women’s participation and empowerment; the membership ranges from rural women, academia, women water professionals, and businesswomen to service organizations and special interest groups: WfWP positions women as active leaders, partners, experts and agents of change in water; WfWP has three important governing and executive bodies, the General Assembly, the Steering Committee and the secretariat; the General Assembly (GA) is the highest governing body in the partnership consisting of one delegate per member; this governing body appoints, suspends and discharges the members of the Steering Committee and decides in all policy and strategic matters of the partnership including the annual work plan of the partnership; the Steering Committee (SC) is tasked with managing the partnership, is accountable to the GA and supervises the activities of the Secretariat; the partnership is supported by the secretariat with professional employees; the secretariat is in charge of the actual execution and coordination of the activities of the partnership; WfWP uses water as an entry point to women’s empowerment and to improve equitable access to water for all, for all uses; women traditionally have vast experience in the water sector and the crucial role they play in effective and efficient water management is increasingly acknowledged and supported by evidence; involving both women and men in integrated water resources initiatives leads to better sustainability, governance and efficiency; WfWP's knowledge exchange and learning platform, along with regional workshops and peer-to-peer support, facilitates members in sharing best practices, lessons learnt and expertise on different themes; it contributes to improved project implementation, and stimulates 'out of the box thinking'.
